An Update from the Vehicle Identification Committee (VIC):
IAATI’s newest committee has been busy making a difference since its first-ever meeting in February. This team
was created to share best vehicle identification practices and foster cooperation within vehicle crime investigation
circles.
Our ranks are comprised of experienced vehicle identification experts from the US, Canada, Europe, South Africa,
and Australia and include the following:
NYPD: Det 1st Grade Tommy Burke and Det Maureen Stefenelli
NICB: Barb Rambo, Dave Roccaforte, Fran Hannigan, Mike Kelso
IAATI South African Branch: Motsamai Mollo (Ford), Philip Opperman (Recoveri)
IAATI Australasian Branch: Cathy Horton (Queensland Police, Australia)
Police Scotland: DC Iain McKinlay
IAATI UK Branch: Mike Briggs (VSST)
Auto Data Direct: Les Cravens
VRSS in Canada: Reg Phillips (co-chair)
General Motors: George Baker (co-chair)
In April, we supported an important initiative by IAATI’s Manufacturers Liaison Committee, who submitted a key
resolution on vehicle marking practices. This document will help manufacturers and aftermarket suppliers justify
vehicle identification practices to aid in recovery and investigations.
In May, our committee was honored to assist with an abduction cold case dating back to the late ‘90s, calling for
our study of decades-old video footage of a vehicle of interest to determine its likely make, model, and model year.
With committee members representing distinguished agencies, the NICB and OEMs, we can leverage uniquely ca-
pable resources to assist with challenging investigations conducted by IAATI members around the globe.
Lastly, we’re evaluating nominations for the Components Parts Marking Award and our new Vehicle Identification
Award, both of which will help IAATI continue to recognize extraordinary achievement in this critical aspect of vehi-
cle crime investigation.
We invite any IAATI members who are passionate about and skilled in vehicle identification to contact us about
opportunities on our exciting new committee. We believe the VIC is doing precisely what IAATI has been chartered
to do - cooperate, share, and leverage the committee members’ remarkable skills and resources to combat vehicle
crime, in perfect step with IAATI’s vision, mission and core values!
Stay well – and safe,
Reg Phillips, George Baker
Co-chairs, IAATI Vehicle Identification Committee
